If there is one country that I have been to on a couple of occasions now, that I feel is not publicised enough as a travel destination - it has to be Sweden. It would seem that far too many people have an inaccurate picture of this Scandinavian country: they think that as it is so much farther north than the UK and because a lot of the state is above The Arctic Circle - it is rather grim and desolate.

This really could not be further from the truth. You see, many parts of Sweden actually enjoy a better and drier climate than here in the UK; yes it does snow more during the winter, but the continental climate that prevails here is definitely better than the muck we get thrown at us from The Gulf Stream.

I promised myself many years ago that there was one natural phenomenon that I was determined to witness before I died: namely to stand in awe and take in the majestic splendour that is The Aurora Borealis. This is something that has captured the imagination of we human beings for millennia and I simply have to see them to appreciate what our ancestors would have thought as the lights stretched across the vast skies within the Arctic Circle.

The good news here is that there are actually plenty of Northern Lights Holidays available to choose between. Within Europe, I have seen packages available to Lapland, Norway and even Iceland and this is combined with a myriad other activities, just in case the Northern Lights feel shy and fail to put in an appearance.

Unfortunately, we are not lucky enough to live in a northern latitude that actually witnesses this type of event. To see the Northern Lights, your best bet is to head above the Arctic Circle, although in some places it is possible to witness them just below (e.g. Iceland is not actually in the Circle). If, like me, you have had to purchase euros for your holiday recently, you may have been left weeping when you caught glimpse of the horrendous exchange rate you received. A Euro is now worth around 92p and this means that travel to Europe is very expensive at the moment.

When you are away on your travels, the best way to work out the exchange rate is to knock off around 10% to give you the conversion into GBP. You should tend to find that most European countries will still be affordable to you, although you will not be getting the massive discounts on products and services you would have around 10 years ago.

Nobody likes nasty surprises while on holiday, least of all accidents which could completely disrupt your trip such as a case of Dengue Fever in Brazil or a carjacking in South Africa. We can never be completely immune to any untoward events cropping up on our dream holiday but there are ways we can make our holidays that little bit safer.

Firstly, and stating the blindingly obvious, make sure that you have decent travel insurance. It is also prudent if travelling around to have some health insurance london or Japan - no matter whether you are travelling fifty miles or five thousand miles, you run the risk of being injured or falling ill. Having the right health insurance will make any incident all the easier to deal with.

Secondly, just be sensible. Easy to say, but this covers a multitude of things from not getting blindingly drunk to making sure that you only travel in parts of the city that do not have a reputation for muggings or worse. Every youngster dreams of backpacking their way around the world, whether it is dancing on the beaches of Thailand until the early hours of the morning or travelling around Australia exploring what this massive and diverse country has to offer. Whilst for many travel remains a pipedream due to the finances needed, others do manage to escape the nest and go travelling for a few months, either before they start university or before taking on a full time job.
